Sometimes scanners and sites will put a mark on an image to claim credit. Watermark usually refers to a symbol placed on the image, or text that is partially transparent, while "signed" is usually for vectors where the vectorer will place his/her name on it in opaque text.

Watermarks and signatures can be photoshopped out.
